Barefoot hiking means: feeling the terrain directly, instead of losing it under thick cushioning. These models feature a thin, flexible sole, a wide toe box, and zero drop – plus a grippy profile sole for traction on trails, rocks, and roots. Models with "Waterproof," "WP," or "GTX" in their name also have a waterproof membrane.

Women's Hiking Models by Brand

  • Xero Shoes: Mesa Trail WP and the Scrambler series (low to ankle-high, many waterproof), plus the ultralight Z-Trail sandal for dry tours
  • Merrell: Trail Glove 8 for the trail and the waterproof Wrapt Mid WP for wet terrain
  • Groundies: Portland (waterproof hiking boot) as well as All Terrain Low and High
  • Others: Doghammer Terrar Rock Wool and the Leguano Attrekktive as a lightweight summer option

Frequent Questions about Barefoot Hiking Shoes

Can you really hike in barefoot shoes? Yes – the grippy profile sole provides traction, and the flexible design allows the foot to roll naturally. A gradual transition is important: Start with shorter tours and gradually increase the distance so your feet and calves get used to the strain.

Which models are waterproof? All models with "Waterproof," "WP," or "GTX" in their name – such as Mesa Trail WP, the Scrambler-Waterproof series, Groundies Portland, and Merrell Wrapt Mid WP. For dry summer tours, the ventilated variants are sufficient.

Low or ankle-high? Low models are lighter and more agile, while ankle-high (Mid/High) models provide more support and protection in rough terrain. For mixed trails, the low variant is usually sufficient.
