Barefoot shoes in winter must combine two things: a flexible, wide barefoot footbed and enough warmth and protection from wet and cold. Many winter models therefore have a warm lining, a waterproof membrane, or a somewhat more robust tread sole – but remain flat, flexible, and without a heel drop. This preserves the natural walking sensation even in sub-zero temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions about Winter Barefoot Shoes

Do your feet get cold in barefoot shoes in winter? Not with the right models: Lined winter barefoot shoes and warm wool insoles keep feet warm. For very thin models, warm socks also help – such as merino socks or the waterproof socks from Sealskinz.

Which models are waterproof? All those with "Waterproof", "WP", or "GX2" in the name, as well as the rain boots. They keep moisture out and remain breathable. Purely lined models provide warmth but are not necessarily waterproof – for snow and mud, it's better to choose a WP model.

Does the barefoot feeling remain in winter? Yes, although a warming lining or winter sole slightly dampens the direct ground feel – the compromise for warm feet. The shoes still remain flat, flexible, and without a heel drop.
